Canon announces the new RF 85mm F1.2L USM lens

Canon Europe today launches its latest generation of iconic 85mm f1.2L lens – the RF 85mm F1.2L USM. Offering the highest resolution of a Canon lens launched to date, it features a super-fast aperture and outstanding AF speeds, making it ideal for capturing candid portraiture and wedding photography. Following Canon’s lens development announcement in February, the RF 85mm F1.2L USM is the first of six RF mount lenses being introduced by Canon in 2019. The 85mm short telephoto lens provides the ideal focal length for portraits and a flattering perspective for faces. The RF 85mm F1.2L USM is only the second lens in Canon’s line-up, after the EF 35mm f1.4L II USM, to use Canon’s unique Blue Spectrum Refractive (BR) optic technology, which effectively corrects axial chromatic aberration that is not completely correctable with a combination of traditional glass lenses – improving resolution and sharpness. It also houses aspherical and Ultra Dispersion (UD) lens elements which redu...

Exclusive Interview with Canon Europe's Mike Burnhill

In an exclusive interview with EOS magazine for the April-June 2019 issue , Michael Burnhill, European Technical Support Manager at Canon Europe, told us what the new EOS R system means for the future of Canon EOS cameras and hints at the exciting optics made possible by the new RF lens mount. Interview by Angela August, Editor AA: Where is Canon heading with the EOS R system?   MB: That's still to be defined, but the plan is to develop the system in both directions. With the EOS RP we've gone towards an entry-level full-frame camera, which is a very large market. It was a bit of curve ball because everyone seemed to have expected a high-end model. When you have a high-end product it's got to be bullet-proof. It's got to work. That's the faith professionals have in Canon. It’s not going to let them down. And that's what has built the CPS [Canon Professional Services] reputation. It’s the same with a pro mirrorless camera – it's got to work. ...

Canon RF lenses on show at The Photography Show 2019

The Photography Show, held annually at the NEC in Birmingham, is a permanent and much anticipated fixture in our calendar, and it was great to be back there from 16 March 2019 for four photography-filled days. Firstly it means you can find us easily... and secondly we can pop across to get hands on with the latest gear at the drop of a hat! We went for the lenses... and stayed for the ballet! The Canon stand was buzzing for much of the show. There was plenty to see – with a viewing gallery, full camera range on display including the Cinema EOS system as part of The Video Show, and inspirational talks on the Spotlight Stage delivered by Canon Ambassadors and experts. The new EOS R system was clearly a big attraction, and with the EOS R reportedly sold out on day three, it certainly drew the attention of many a visitor. Part of the stand included a shooting zone, with Cli...

EF-S 35mm f2.8 Macro lens

Canon has launched a new innovative lens. Designed for macro and close-up photography, the EF-S 35mm f2.8 Macro IS STM features Canon’s unique built-in Macro Lite technology and is the first lens of its kind in the EF-S range. It is compatible with all EOS APS-C digital single-lens reflex cameras (except the EOS D30, D60 and 10D). The lens has built-in LEDs which illuminate small objects while minimising the shadows it casts with a tapered edge design. It offers life-size (1:1) magnification, capturing subjects as close as 30mm from the front of the lens. This close working distance and magnification level means it is ideal for revealing the tiny and intricate details of subjects such as jewellery, food and crafts. The built-in Optical Image Stabilizer with Hybrid IS compensates for angular and linear movement. This is especially useful for handheld macro shooting as this is prone to exaggerate camera shake, often causing unwanted blur. The built-in Macro Lite offers flexible...

Today, Canon is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the launch of its world-renowned EOS System. Canon’s EOS System made its debut on 1 March 1987 with the launch of the EOS 650 SLR camera and EF lenses, at a time when visiting your local pharmacy to develop your camera film was the norm. Thirty years on the world has changed, but the EOS system remains a staple in the world of photography. Technology featured within the EOS system has helped create and inspire changes in the way people take photos. The EOS system came to life in 1987 after Canon announced its aim to develop a highly-refined autofocus (AF) SLR model. It moved away from its FD lens system to create the world’s first fully electronic mount system. From then the EOS range has included the first affordable consumer DSLR – the EOS 300D – which ushered in a new era of digital photography in 2003. Five years later in 2008, the EOS 5D Mark II revolutionised filmmaking by offering Full HD movie recording on a DSLR. ...
