PowerShot PX – Canon's smart camera

Canon has officially unveiled its first smart camera – the PowerShot PX – which it says is set to transform how family moments are captured.  First announced as a concept camera back in 2018, then on limited release via the Japanese crowdfunding platform Makuake ( and called PowerShot PICK – see story from 29 January 2021 ), the PowerShot PX is a small, smart and friendly-looking camera, which automatically captures 11.7MP images and 60p Full HD video. It's programmed to look for faces, and can even be programmed to prioritise particular people.

PowerShot PICK – Canon's first AI camera

Canon has enjoyed success in funding various concept cameras via crowdfunding platforms, and the PowerShot PICK is the latest in its line-up to be financed in this way.  It was first introduced as a concept camera in 2018, but it has now been launched on the Japanese crowdfunding platform, Makuake. with a ¥1,000,000 goal.  At only 90mm high, this palm-sized camera is packed with Canon’s optical, video processing and artificial intelligence (AI) technology. It can survey a scene, search for people’s faces and automatically take pictures at the ideal moment.  According to Canon, the PowerShot PICK is designed to “blend in with your family’s circle so that you can forget about it, so you can stay close to your family at home or out.” The PowerShot PICK costs ¥42,900 (about $390). While Canon anticipates delivering the PowerShot PICK to backers by the end of July 2021, whether or not it makes it to more general release has not been confirmed.
