Canon has announced that a range of significant free-of-charge firmware updates for existing Cinema EOS cameras will be coming later in 2025. This includes the addition of 3:2 Open Gate RAW Recording at 6000x4000 resolution to the EOS C400, View Assist during Playback on the EOS C80, among other improvements to core features such as focus peaking on both the C400 and C80, as well as the EOS R5 C and EOS C70. What is Open Gate recording? EOS cameras capture stills with the default ratio of 3:2. Yet, by default, video is captured with the ratio of 16:9, which automatically crops what’s captured by the sensor. Open Gate recording is a feature which instead allows for full capture of the sensor when recording video. Not only does this take advantage of the camera’s full width and height of the sensor, but it allows for greater versatility when cropping video, as the same footage can be edited once then used in multiple ways and in different aspect ratios to suit the platfor...
