PowerShot PX – Canon's smart camera

Canon has officially unveiled its first smart camera – the PowerShot PX – which it says is set to transform how family moments are captured. 

First announced as a concept camera back in 2018, then on limited release via the Japanese crowdfunding platform Makuake (and called PowerShot PICK – see story from 29 January 2021), the PowerShot PX is a small, smart and friendly-looking camera, which automatically captures 11.7MP images and 60p Full HD video. It's programmed to look for faces, and can even be programmed to prioritise particular people.

When you want to capture life’s precious moments and be in the shot, the PowerShot PX is ideal – following the action and framing subjects intelligently to capture natural expressions and reactions. Once switched on, the portable PowerShot PX can be placed anywhere around the home to take candid shots of everyday moments, while voice command capabilities allow complete hands-free control to capture still images or dynamic videos.

Thanks to the simple yet portable design, USB-C charging and built-in Wi-Fi – which links to smart devices – the compact PowerShot PX can go anywhere. With intelligent facial recognition features, PowerShot PX uses auto-subject searching to keep loved ones in the frame and capture photos that otherwise might have been missed. Its 19-57mm focal length range and flexible pan-and-tilt zoom lens offers a broad field of view of 340˚ horizontally and 110˚ vertically to follow the action.

Treasure the everyday
Look back on a digital scrapbook of candid moments with PowerShot PX’s iOS and Android apps and get recommendations from this clever camera on the strongest shots to keep. These cherished photos and videos are then stored on a memory card for easy upload to a computer. Manually control the camera with the app to compose the perfect shot and capture images from a distance, all without the need to run back and forth to check the device. Families can even customise automatic shooting settings, angle the lens to snap pictures in their own style and select familiar faces within the app to increase priority when shooting. The PowerShot PX can also double as a webcam with the use of the PC webcam utility app .

The PowerShot PX will be available from November 2021 and will retail at £449.99 / €499.99.

Canon teases new hybrid lenses

  Canon has announced its intention to add new lenses to its hybrid RF L-series range on 30 October 2024, teasing with the image above. Canon’s hybrid lenses are a range of RF L-series primes and zooms designed for high performance stills and video capture. They are able to perform multiple roles and harness technology from Canon’s broadcast, cinema and existing RF lenses to make for a truly versatile range. The first two lenses in the range are the RF 24-105mm f2.8L IS USM Z , launched in November 2023, and the RF 35mm f1.4L VCM lens , announced earlier this year in June. Canon announces forthcoming firmware updates

Canon has announced that there will shortly be firmware updates for a number of its EOS R-series mirrorless and PowerShot digital cameras. With this announcement, Canon reaffirms its commitment to continuous product innovation. The updates have been developed in response to real-world feedback from creators and photographers, and promise to deliver additional features and performance enhancements, helping customers get even more from the cameras they already own. In particular, the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II will gain button customisation for pre-continuous shooting, following feedback from professional sports photographers, colour temperature memory for four K-values, while five of the range feature Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connection improvements to make 5GHz available to more applications, and many detailed improvements.
