Canon RF lenses on show at The Photography Show 2019

The Photography Show, held annually at the NEC in Birmingham, is a permanent and much anticipated fixture in our calendar, and it was great to be back there from 16 March 2019 for four photography-filled days.

Our EOS magazine stand at the show is right next to the Canon stand, and this has significant advantages. Firstly it means you can find us easily... and secondly we can pop across to get hands on with the latest gear at the drop of a hat!

We went for the lenses... and stayed for the ballet!

The Canon stand was buzzing for much of the show. There was plenty to see – with a viewing gallery, full camera range on display including the Cinema EOS system as part of The Video Show, and inspirational talks on the Spotlight Stage delivered by Canon Ambassadors and experts.

The new EOS R system was clearly a big attraction, and with the EOS R reportedly sold out on day three, it certainly drew the attention of many a visitor.

Part of the stand included a shooting zone, with Clive Booth carrying out a live shoot with ballet dancers, surrounded by a bank of EOS R and RP cameras available for hands-on testing.

Nina Bailey, Technical Editor, was impressed at how well the EOS R coped – the harsh lighting and backlit subjects made it a challenging environment to shoot.

Here's one of the shots from day three of the show, captured with the EOS R and RF 24-105mm F4L IS USM lens (at 90mm). 1/320 second at f6.3, ISO 12800.
As well as being able to try out the R-series cameras, on display for the first time in Europe were mock-ups of five of the new RF lenses destined for 2019 release.

We were warned before picking them up that these mock-ups were, in fact, hollow – so no optics inside.

However, being able to see the scale of the lenses – particularly the reduced dimensions of the RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM vs. the EF 70-200mm f2.8L II – demonstrated the potential size reduction achievable with the new full frame mirrorless EOS R system, realised via the design implications of the new RF lens mount.

The Photography Show will return to Birmingham NEC next year on 14-17 March 2020. Save the dates, and we'll see you there!
