Two new ultra-wide RF lenses from Canon

Canon today expands its professional RF lens range with two new ultra-wide lenses that invite photographers and filmmakers to unleash their creativity and capture the world in dynamic new ways. With their fast apertures, compact sizes and outstanding optical quality, the RF 7-14mm f2.8-3.5L FISHEYE STM and RF 14mm f1.4L VCM are worlds apart from ordinary wide-angle lenses.

RF 14mm f1.4L VCM lens

Canon RF 14mm f1.4L VCM lensAn ultra-wide, ultra-fast and ultra-light prime lens, the RF 14mm f1.4L VCM is the latest – and widest – addition to Canon’s hybrid lens line-up, a versatile optic for stills and video shooters alike. It's ideal for landscapes, interiors, low light and astrophotography, it’s well-suited to outdoor pursuits thanks to the durable L-series construction with dust- and moisture-resistance.

The lens design incorporates a number of Canon optical technologies, including three glass-moulded (GMo) aspherical elements which suppress sagittal coma flare – important when shooting stars and other points of light – while Fluorite, Blue spectrum refractive and Ultra-low dispersion (UD) elements reduce chromatic aberration. Ghosting and flare are minimised though the use of Canon’s sophisticated SWC and ASC coatings.

RF 7-14mm f2.8-3.5L FISHEYE STM

Canon RF 7-14mm f2.8-3.5L FISHEYE STM lens
A specialist lens with unique properties, the RF 7-14mm f2.8-3.5L FISHEYE STM follows in the footsteps of the EF 8-15mm f4L Fisheye USM, but with optical innovation for added impact. It’s the world’s first lens to offer 190º diagonal angle-of-view, achievable at the 7mm end with Canon full frame cameras which feature Open Gate recording, as well as 180° diagonal fisheye image at 14mm. For cameras with the smaller APS-C sensor, the same 180° diagonal fisheye can be achieved at 8.7mm. There’s a lock position on the lens to fix the lens at the appropriate focal length.

Canon says that the image quality far exceeds the EF fisheye lens, aided by ‘advanced optical design’. It’s also more than 10% lighter than the EF 8-15mm. Two replica aspherical elements and five UD elements are used to reduce optical aberrations.

Constructed with a Stepper Motor (STM) for near-silent operation, dust- and moisture-resistance plus a rear drop-in filter, it’s a versatile lens for professional stills and video work. Circular fisheye videos can be captured and converted to 2D 180° VR files via EOS VR Utility, and subsequently viewed on a VR headset.

Firmware updates for EOS R1 and R5 Mark II

Canon has released new firmware for its flagship EOS R1 camera (version 1.0.2) as well as the EOS R5 Mark II (version 1.0.3), both of which offer the following enhancement and fix: 1. Optimizes the timing of the camera's display of its internal camera temperature warning indicator. 2. Fixes an issue that may interfere with the camera's ability to focus properly when using AF (autofocus) in certain zoom ranges. For the EOS R5 Mark II, Canon advises that if the camera's firmware is Version 1.0.1, you should update the firmware with only one memory card inserted into the camera. You should always read the instructions that come with the firmware update, as there are often details specific to that update, as with the EOS R5 Mark II (above).
