Canon launches EOS C50 and RF 85mm f1.4L VCM lens to add to EOS R system

Canon has today announced two new additions to the EOS R system, the EOS C50 Cinema EOS camera and the RF 85mm f1.4L VCM lens.

EOS C50 – compact cinematography tool

A new entry point to Canon's Cinema EOS range, the EOS C50 is a stepping stone from the PowerShot V-series and recent EOS V-series cameras across to the Cinema series. It's a highly specced video tool, offering 7K video, as well as 4K oversampled from 7K, Open Gate recording, the ability to record a cropped version of your video footage automatically as well as Canon Log 2 and Canon Log 3.

Although the C50 is video-first, it also offers a Photo mode for stills, driven by an all-new 32MP sensor and capable of 40 frames per second (fps). Taking a leaf out of the EOS R5 C's book, the camera offers two menu systems – one for stills, derived from the Canon EOS R-series cameras and one for video, offering the comprehensive feature-set of the Cinema EOS range.

Modular by nature, with a host of connectivity features and points on the camera, the C50 comes with a detachable handle. The handle features a further record button, in addition to the three found on the camera body. With its native RF mount, it's compatible with the full range of RF lenses – including Canon's new hybrid lenses as well as the EOS VR system lenses such as the 3D-ready RF 5.2mm DUAL Fisheye lens – and it can also be used with the PL-RF mount adapter, giving access to an even greater range of optics from the Cine PL lens range as well as the EF lens system.

The EOS C50 will be available in November 2025 (date TBC) for a recommended retail price (RRP) of £3359.99 / €3899.99.

RF 85mm f1.4L VCM – 'A portrait classic, reinvented'

A prime lens that's bound to appeal to portrait and wedding photographers, this lens is a twist on the EF 85mm f1.4L IS USM lens launched in late 2017. It's lighter than its predecessor, however, and Canon says that it is optically more advanced too, using Air Sphere Coating and Super Spectra coating to reduce flare and ghosting. It's also around half of the weight of the RF 85mm f1.2L USM lens, making it a more agile optical tool in a variety of situations.

The RF 85mm f1.4L VCM is the fifth prime lens in Canon's latest hybrid lens line-up, and is the same physical size overall as its shorter focal length siblings. Driven by a very quiet Voice Coil Motor (VCM), the lens is ideal for both stills and video work. There's an iris ring as well as a control ring and a programmable lens function button. It's also weather-resistant, just like other L-series lenses which bear Canon's 'premium' red ring mark. ALthough there's no built-in optical stabilizer, when combined with an R-series camera offering in-body image stabilisation (IBIS), there's up to an 8-stop benefit.

The RF 85mm f1.4L VCM lens will be available to purchase from 30 September 2025 for £1679.99 / €1899.99 (RRP).

Firmware updates for EOS R1 and R5 Mark II

Canon has released new firmware for its flagship EOS R1 camera (version 1.0.2) as well as the EOS R5 Mark II (version 1.0.3), both of which offer the following enhancement and fix: 1. Optimizes the timing of the camera's display of its internal camera temperature warning indicator. 2. Fixes an issue that may interfere with the camera's ability to focus properly when using AF (autofocus) in certain zoom ranges. For the EOS R5 Mark II, Canon advises that if the camera's firmware is Version 1.0.1, you should update the firmware with only one memory card inserted into the camera. You should always read the instructions that come with the firmware update, as there are often details specific to that update, as with the EOS R5 Mark II (above).
