Canon announces new wide-angle zoom, the RF 16-28mm f2.8 IS STM

Canon has today announced the introduction of a brand new ultra-wide zoom lens for the EOS R mirrorless system. Compact and lightweight for a lens of this type, the RF 16-28mm f2.8 IS STM lens is physically similar to the RF 28-70mm f2.8 IS STM and uses a retractable design to reduce its size when stored away.

The lens offers 5.5-stops of optical image stabilisation, which increases to 8 stops when used on a camera with in-body image stabilisation. It's weather-resistance, despite not being an L-series lens.

Designed with two Aspheric lens elements and four Ultra-low dispersion elements, the focus has been on creating a lens which is portable, more affordable but which still offers excellent image quality free from distortions common to wider angle lenses. This is achieved not only through the lens construction itself, but also in combination with digital in-camera corrections.

Key features of the RF 16-28mm f2.8 IS STM
• Ultra-wide 16-28mm focal length range with a wide f/2.8 aperture throughout, for a wide variety of shooting scenarios
• 5.5-stops of optical image stabilisation (IS) (1)
• 8-stops when combined with a camera featuring In-Body Image Stabilizer (IBIS) (2)
• Excellent image quality and sharp high-contrast images thanks to two aspheric and four UD lens elements plus Super Spectra coating
• Durable build quality with added weather resistance
• 9-blade circular aperture offering great artistic control of bokeh and highlights
• Compact and lightweight at 445g, measuring 76.5mm (W) x and 91mm (L) when retracted.

The RF 16-28mm f2.8 IS STM lens will be available from February 2025 with an RRP of £1249.99/ €1419.99. For full specifications and press release, visit the Canon EOS system.

Canon announces development of flagship EOS R1

Canon Inc. has announced today that it is currently developing the EOS R1, a full-frame mirrorless camera, as the first flagship model for the EOS R system.  Whilst there is no timeline given for launch as yet, Canon has released hints of what's to come in terms of technology. It will use a newly developed processor, called DIGIC Accelerator, alongside the existing DIGIC X found in other R-series cameras plus a newly developed image sensor, which will enable a large volume of data to be processed at high speeds, and which will also deliver advances in autofocus (AF) and other functions as yet unspecified. The Deep learning technology – first found in the current flagship EOS-1D X Mark III DSLR camera – will be embedded in the new EOS R1. Canon also mentions a new AF 'Action Priority' function, which " further recognises subject movement by rapidly analysing the subject's status ". This AI-based programming promises to predict the key activity in a match, there...

Canon teases new hybrid lenses

Canon has announced its intention to add new lenses to its hybrid RF L-series range on 30 October 2024, teasing with the image above. Canon’s hybrid lenses are a range of RF L-series primes and zooms designed for high performance stills and video capture. They are able to perform multiple roles and harness technology from Canon’s broadcast, cinema and existing RF lenses to make for a truly versatile range. The first two lenses in the range are the RF 24-105mm f2.8L IS USM Z , launched in November 2023, and the RF 35mm f1.4L VCM lens , announced earlier this year in June. Keep an eye out as full details will be published as soon as they're available on 30 October 2024.
