Canon announces RF-S 7.8mm f4 STM DUAL lens for spatial content creation

Moments after the RF-S 3.9mm lens was launched back on 10 June 2024, a second announcement was released by Canon USA, with details of the RF-S 7.8mm f4 STM Dual lens which – it said – would be a world-first dedicated, interchangeable lens for capturing spatial video specifically for viewing via Apple Vision Pro.

The time has now arrived for Canon UK to officially announce this lens.

Designed for the growing generation of VR headset users who are looking to create their own content, the RF-S 7.8mm f4 STM DUAL lens is compatible with the EOS R7 at launch, making an affordable combination when getting started with 3D content. It’s simple to use and, whilst the lens captures two images side-by-side onto the sensor, Canon’s EOS VR Utility app can seamlessly transform the dual footage into a single spatial video format for enhanced viewing when using a VR headset or via other means of watching spatial content.

The RF-S 7.8mm lens offers a 63º field-of-view, a natural perspective which gives greater depth and vivid realism via the stereoscopic capture.

Key features

  • Lightweight, only 130g
  • 63º field-of-view for a natural perspective
  • Part of EOS VR system
  • For spatial video creation
  • Stereoscopic capture for viewing on VR devices

The RF-S 7.8mm f4 STM DUAL lens is expected to be available in mid-November 2024 with an RRP of £544.99.

Firmware updates for EOS R1 and R5 Mark II

Canon has released new firmware for its flagship EOS R1 camera (version 1.0.2) as well as the EOS R5 Mark II (version 1.0.3), both of which offer the following enhancement and fix: 1. Optimizes the timing of the camera's display of its internal camera temperature warning indicator. 2. For the EOS R5 Mark II, Canon advises that if the camera's firmware is Version 1.0.1, you should update the firmware with only one memory card inserted into the camera. You should always read the instructions that come with the firmware update, as there are often details specific to that update, as with the EOS R5 Mark II (above).
