Canon announces first-of-its-kind hybrid RF 35mm f1.4L VCM prime lens and new Speedlite EL-10

Canon has announced two new products for the EOS R system: the RF 35mm f1.4L VCM lens and the Speedlite EL-10 flashgun.

RF 35mm f1.4L VCM

The first prime lens to belong to Canon's new hybrid range – enabling mixed media creators to move seamlessly between video and stills – the RF 35mm f1.4L VCM offers an Iris ring for absolute control over the aperture. It also has an 11-blade aperture for smooth out-of-focus areas and has minimal focus breathing.

It's Canon's first lens to use a Voice Coil Motor (VCM), a type of linear electromagnetic motor which has benefits such as excellent power-to-weight ratio and is incredibly smooth and precise in its motion.

The Voice Coil Motor is deployed alongside a Nano USM, with the two autofocus motors working to power independent groups of elements.

The lens also offers a dedicated Control ring – a common feature to all RF lenses – as well as a customisable lens function button.

Key features

  • 11-blade aperture, with 14 elements in 11 groups
  • 7-stop image stabilisation when used with a camera with in-body image stabilisation
  • Physically similar to EF 35mm f1.4L lens, but 200g lighter at 555g
  • Two UD and two aspherical lens elements

Speedlite EL-10

Sitting mid-range between the EL-5 and EL-100 flashguns, the Speedlite EL-10 offers a guide number of 40 (metres, ISO 100), bounce flash and is the second flash in the EL-series to feature the new multi-function hotshoe which allows for better communication with the camera.

With a recycle time of 1.5 seconds, this every day, enthusiast-aimed flash is a lightweight and compact addition to a kitbag. It can be programmed into the camera's custom shooting modes, plus a dedicated on-flash Direct menu button gives immediate access to the flash menus in-camera. The flash can also be operated from the Canon Camera Connect app. It's powered with four AA batteries.

Key features

  • GN 40
  • Horizontal tilt 90º, vertical 150º (right) and 180º (left)
  • 1.5 second recycle time
  • 1/1 to 1/1024 power output
  • Diffuser panel

Canon announces development of flagship EOS R1

Canon Inc. has announced today that it is currently developing the EOS R1, a full-frame mirrorless camera, as the first flagship model for the EOS R system.  Whilst there is no timeline given for launch as yet, Canon has released hints of what's to come in terms of technology. It will use a newly developed processor, called DIGIC Accelerator, alongside the existing DIGIC X found in other R-series cameras plus a newly developed image sensor, which will enable a large volume of data to be processed at high speeds, and which will also deliver advances in autofocus (AF) and other functions as yet unspecified. The Deep learning technology – first found in the current flagship EOS-1D X Mark III DSLR camera – will be embedded in the new EOS R1. Canon also mentions a new AF 'Action Priority' function, which " further recognises subject movement by rapidly analysing the subject's status ". This AI-based programming promises to predict the key activity in a match, there...

Canon announces EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II as next R system evolution

Canon has today launched two new cameras for the EOS R system – the EOS R1, a new flagship model to take over from the EOS-1D X Mark III, and the EOS R5 Mark II, the next iteration of the ever-popular 5-series. The two camera share much more than just a launch date. They herald the arrival of the next generation of Canon's sensor-based focusing system – Dual Pixel Intelligent AF – as well as offering a raft of improvements over previous R-series cameras. The new features and the improvements alike are powered by a duo of DIGIC processors, one DIGIC X and one DIGIC Accelerator – and by Deep Learning, with the introduction of Action Priority AF for team-based sports. Both cameras sport brand new, purpose-made back illuminated stacked (BSI) sensors; the EOS R1 offers 24.2MP and the EOS R5 Mark II offers 45MP. Rolling shutter effect is reduced, significantly so on the EOS R1. In-camera there's also an up-scaling feature, giving users of both cameras the opportunity to increase res...
