Canon announces EOS R100 camera and RF 28mm f2.8 pancake lens

Canon’s newest entry-level EOS R System mirrorless camera has been designed to effortlessly capture special moments and is small enough to carry on any family adventure. Canon also demonstrates its commitment to expanding the advanced range of RF prime lenses with the launch of the RF 28mm f2.8 STM – the smallest and lightest RF lens yet.

EOS R100

A family-friendly, user-friendly and budget-friendly camera for capturing family moments and trips, the EOS R100 is a small APS-C mirrorless camera. It's a highly portable option for beginners looking to improve image and video quality that’s beyond the capabilities of their smartphone.

Simplicity is the name of the game with the EOS R100, with features hand-picked to provide optimal handling and usability. There’s a built-in Feature guide and graphic-style menu to get to grips with this camera, as well as a bundle of features to enhance your creativity and images, such as Creative Assist and Creative Filters.

The EOS R100 has a bright 2.36m electronic viewfinder for comfortable viewing, as well as a fixed 3-inch rear LCD screen for a larger view of settings and image preview.

When capturing family and friends, this camera will keep track of faces and even eyes thanks to Canon’s intelligent Face detection + tracking focusing system. It's powered by a DIGIC 8 processor, enabling speeds of up to 6.5 frames per second, and has an optimised APS-C (1.6x crop) sensor that's been modified from the popular EOS M50 Mark II.

RF 28mm f2.8 STM

The Canon RF 28mm STM pancake lens is an incredibly compact and lightweight prime lens for the EOS R system. With a wide angle fixed focal length of 28mm and fixed maximum aperture of f2.8, it’s the ideal walk-around lens – whether you’re in the city, on holiday or capturing everyday life. It has three precision molded (PMo) elements, including new ’seagull-shaped’ lens elements which are rectangular rather than circular.

OC-E4A off-camera shoe cord

Alongside the new camera and lens, Canon has also announced a specialist accessory for EOS R system cameras which feature the new multi-function hotshoe. The OC-E4A off-camera shoe cord is compatible at launch with the EOS R3, EOS R6 Mark II, EOS R7, EOS R8, EOS R10 and EOS R50 cameras. It's slightly longer than the OC-E3 at 80cm, giving you freedom to take your flash and other accessories off-camera. Thanks to the multi-function shoe, it can also power selected accessories (not flashguns) from the camera.

All three products are expected to be available from the end of June 2023 as follows:

Canon announces development of flagship EOS R1

Canon Inc. has announced today that it is currently developing the EOS R1, a full-frame mirrorless camera, as the first flagship model for the EOS R system.  Whilst there is no timeline given for launch as yet, Canon has released hints of what's to come in terms of technology. It will use a newly developed processor, called DIGIC Accelerator, alongside the existing DIGIC X found in other R-series cameras plus a newly developed image sensor, which will enable a large volume of data to be processed at high speeds, and which will also deliver advances in autofocus (AF) and other functions as yet unspecified. The Deep learning technology – first found in the current flagship EOS-1D X Mark III DSLR camera – will be embedded in the new EOS R1. Canon also mentions a new AF 'Action Priority' function, which " further recognises subject movement by rapidly analysing the subject's status ". Canon announces EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II as next R system evolution

Canon has today launched two new cameras for the EOS R system – the EOS R1, a new flagship model to take over from the EOS-1D X Mark III, and the EOS R5 Mark II, the next iteration of the ever-popular 5-series. The two camera share much more than just a launch date. They herald the arrival of the next generation of Canon's sensor-based focusing system – Dual Pixel Intelligent AF – as well as offering a raft of improvements over previous R-series cameras. The new features and the improvements alike are powered by a duo of DIGIC processors, one DIGIC X and one DIGIC Accelerator – and by Deep Learning, with the introduction of Action Priority AF for team-based sports. Both cameras sport brand new, purpose-made back illuminated stacked (BSI) sensors; the EOS R1 offers 24.2MP and the EOS R5 Mark II offers 45MP. Rolling shutter effect is reduced, significantly so on the EOS R1. In-camera there's also an up-scaling feature, giving users of both cameras the opportunity to increase res
