Canon announces the EOS R50 camera and RF-S 55-210mm f5-7.1 IS STM lens

Canon EOS R50 camera

Canon Europe today announces the new EOS R50 mirrorless camera, offering it as the perfect gateway into the EOS R range for content creators looking to step up from their smartphone. With the ability to shoot 4K video and sharp stills, this versatile camera offers a huge feature-set in a compact and highly portable package.

Featuring a 24.2MP APS-C sensor, Canon's latest sensor-based focusing system Dual Pixel CMOS AF II and AI-driven subject detection for People, Animals and Vehicles, the EOS R50 offers tried and tested technology for advancing your imaging. Plus, if this is your first interchangeable lens camera, there are various in-built assistive features to help you develop your skills at your own pace. Creative assist automatically offers the ideal settings for different scenes, while creative bracketing provides multiple looks for each image.

These features and more are backed up with the ability to shoot continuously at 12 frames per second (fps) using the electronic first curtain shutter, and 15fps with the silent electronic shutter mode.

The EOS R50 also gives you access to the vast Canon EOS system. Natively compatible with RF and RF-S lenses, you can also access the EF lens range via the EF-EOS R adapter, giving  you extra choice and versatility. On top of the camera there's a multi-function hot shoe, meaning you can easily connect external accessories such as a microphone to the camera, which is more resistant to noise interference than when connected via a cable. The multi-function shoe can also be used to supply power from the camera to new accessories meaning you are free from the hassle of power management when creating content on the go.

Canon RF-S 55-210mm f5-7.1 IS STM lens

Alongside the EOS R50 Canon is also announcing the third RF-S lens in the line-up. Optically designed to match the smaller APS-C sensor, the RF-S 55-210mm f5-7.1 IS STM is a compact and versatile RF zoom lens that is ideal for capturing subjects that are further away or achieving a flattering look to portraits with subject separation and blurred backgrounds. Optical image stabilisation extends your ability for blur-free handheld shooting, and an STM focusing system achieves smooth and quiet autofocusing which is perfect for shooting video.

Canon announces development of flagship EOS R1

Canon Inc. has announced today that it is currently developing the EOS R1, a full-frame mirrorless camera, as the first flagship model for the EOS R system.  Whilst there is no timeline given for launch as yet, Canon has released hints of what's to come in terms of technology. It will use a newly developed processor, called DIGIC Accelerator, alongside the existing DIGIC X found in other R-series cameras plus a newly developed image sensor, which will enable a large volume of data to be processed at high speeds, and which will also deliver advances in autofocus (AF) and other functions as yet unspecified. The Deep learning technology – first found in the current flagship EOS-1D X Mark III DSLR camera – will be embedded in the new EOS R1. Canon also mentions a new AF 'Action Priority' function, which " further recognises subject movement by rapidly analysing the subject's status ". This AI-based programming promises to predict the key activity in a match, there

Canon announces EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II as next R system evolution

Canon has today launched two new cameras for the EOS R system – the EOS R1, a new flagship model to take over from the EOS-1D X Mark III, and the EOS R5 Mark II, the next iteration of the ever-popular 5-series. The two camera share much more than just a launch date. They herald the arrival of the next generation of Canon's sensor-based focusing system – Dual Pixel Intelligent AF – as well as offering a raft of improvements over previous R-series cameras. The new features and the improvements alike are powered by a duo of DIGIC processors, one DIGIC X and one DIGIC Accelerator – and by Deep Learning, with the introduction of Action Priority AF for team-based sports. Both cameras sport brand new, purpose-made back illuminated stacked (BSI) sensors; the EOS R1 offers 24.2MP and the EOS R5 Mark II offers 45MP. Rolling shutter effect is reduced, significantly so on the EOS R1. In-camera there's also an up-scaling feature, giving users of both cameras the opportunity to increase res
