Two new wide-angle RF lenses for EOS enthusiasts

Canon has announced the launch of two new affordable full frame RF lenses: the RF 24mm f1.8 MACRO IS STM and RF 15-30mm f4.5-6.3 IS STM.

The RF 24mm f1.8 MACRO IS STM is a compact and versatile wide-angle 24mm prime lens. Weighing just 270g and featuring a gear type STM motor which enables fast and quiet focusing, the RF 24mm f1.8 MACRO IS STM is ideal for travel and landscape photographers. It's equipped with image stabilisation – offering up to 5-stop benefit – making it a versatile tool for both stills and video, whether in low light or for hand-held close-ups. With a minimum focusing distance of 14cm (0.5x magnification), this lens offers huge creative potential in a small package.

The RF 15-30mm f4.5-6.3 IS STM is an ultra-wide-angle lens, useful for capturing the full context and scale of subjects such as buildings and stunning natural landscapes. It has a 5.5-stop optical Image Stabilizer (IS) which allows for longer shutter speeds for hand-held shooting and slick video. Weighing just 390g this lens offers a compact, robust design. Featuring a leadscrew-type STM focusing motor, the RF 15-30mm f4.5-6.3 IS STM can quickly focus on fast moving subjects. The new optical design of the RF 15-30mm f4.5-6.3 IS STM features aspherical and precision moulded elements and lens coatings.

Not to be outdone by the RF 24mm, the RF 15-30mm f4.5-6.3 IS STM lens also has half life-size (0.52x) magnification when in manual focus mode (at 15mm setting).

Both lenses also combine with in-body image stabilisation (IBIS) on selected EOS R-series models to give an extra 1.5-stop benefit.

The RF 24mm f1.8 MACRO IS STM will retail at £719.99 / €819.99.
The RF 15-30mm f4.5-6.3 IS STM will retail at £669.99 / €759.99.

Canon announces development of flagship EOS R1

Canon Inc. has announced today that it is currently developing the EOS R1, a full-frame mirrorless camera, as the first flagship model for the EOS R system.  Whilst there is no timeline given for launch as yet, Canon has released hints of what's to come in terms of technology. It will use a newly developed processor, called DIGIC Accelerator, alongside the existing DIGIC X found in other R-series cameras plus a newly developed image sensor, which will enable a large volume of data to be processed at high speeds, and which will also deliver advances in autofocus (AF) and other functions as yet unspecified. The Deep learning technology – first found in the current flagship EOS-1D X Mark III DSLR camera – will be embedded in the new EOS R1. Canon also mentions a new AF 'Action Priority' function, which " further recognises subject movement by rapidly analysing the subject's status ". Canon announces EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II as next R system evolution

Canon has today launched two new cameras for the EOS R system – the EOS R1, a new flagship model to take over from the EOS-1D X Mark III, and the EOS R5 Mark II, the next iteration of the ever-popular 5-series. The two camera share much more than just a launch date. They herald the arrival of the next generation of Canon's sensor-based focusing system – Dual Pixel Intelligent AF – as well as offering a raft of improvements over previous R-series cameras. The new features and the improvements alike are powered by a duo of DIGIC processors, one DIGIC X and one DIGIC Accelerator – and by Deep Learning, with the introduction of Action Priority AF for team-based sports. Both cameras sport brand new, purpose-made back illuminated stacked (BSI) sensors; the EOS R1 offers 24.2MP and the EOS R5 Mark II offers 45MP. Rolling shutter effect is reduced, significantly so on the EOS R1. In-camera there's also an up-scaling feature, giving users of both cameras the opportunity to increase res
