Enhanced features for EOS R5, R6 and 1D X Mark III

Canon Europe has announced that it will shortly be releasing firmware updates for the EOS R5, EOS R6 and EOS-1D X Mark III cameras. Following the recent launch of the EOS R3, Canon will add some of the R3's revolutionary features to other cameras in its current professional line-up.

Subject tracking improvements
For the R5 and R6 mirrorless cameras, the firmware update will add 'Vehicles' to the Subject detection AF system. An innovation first delivered with the EOS R3, this means that the EOS R5 and R6 will be able to track racing cars and bikes in addition to animals and people. The update also enhances the overall AF tracking performance of people, with improved eye and face detection even when the subject is wearing a mask, as well as adding body detection.

Strengthening the autofocus system within the EOS-1D X Mark III for winter sports, the firmware provides improved head detection for subjects wearing goggles and helmets.

Simplified operation for streamlined workflows
The firmware update for the EOS R5 and R6 brings the ability to set a Custom white balance in Live View, thereby streamlining manual white balance control.

Previously, the EOS-1D X Mark III employed separate buttons for voice memo and image rating, but with newly added settings users can use one button to perform both functions simultaneously.

The firmware for all three cameras also ensures that users cannot mistakenly transfer files by pressing the Multi controller when 'Transfer with SET' is programmed for FTP transfer.

Lens support
The latest update for the EOS R5 will make it compatible with Canon’s new EOS VR SYSTEM and the RF 5.2mm f2.8L DUAL FISHEYE lens. It also offers full-time manual support for the RF 70-200mm F4L IS USM, even if AF is selected.

The firmware updates for the EOS R5 (v1.5.0), EOS R6 (v1.5.0) and EOS-1D X Mark III (v1.6.0) will be available to download from 2 December 2021 from the Canon support hub

Firmware updates for EOS R1 and R5 Mark II

Canon has released new firmware for its flagship EOS R1 camera (version 1.0.2) as well as the EOS R5 Mark II (version 1.0.3), both of which offer the following enhancement and fix: 1. Optimizes the timing of the camera's display of its internal camera temperature warning indicator. 2. Fixes an issue that may interfere with the camera's ability to focus properly when using AF (autofocus) in certain zoom ranges. For the EOS R5 Mark II, Canon advises that if the camera's firmware is Version 1.0.1, you should update the firmware with only one memory card inserted into the camera. You should always read the instructions that come with the firmware update, as there are often details specific to that update, as with the EOS R5 Mark II (above).
