Three new Canon RF lenses announced

Canon has announced three new lenses for its EOS R ful frame mirrorless system. Taking leaves straight out of the EF lens book, the RF 100mm f2.8L MACRO IS USM, the RF 400mm f2.8L IS USM and RF 600mm f4L IS USM lenses all offer photographers 'next-level capabilities'.

The RF 100mm f2.8L MACRO IS USM lens brings a world first for an AF macro lens – offering 1.4x magnification of subjects, bringing greater than life-size reproduction of small subjects. Like the EF 100mm f2.8L MACRO IS USM lens, it's a versatile piece of kit, whether you capture close-up and macro or portraits. It's also the first Canon lens to feature a Spherical Aberration Control ring, which delivers even greater creative control over background and foreground bokeh.

For full specifications and press release, see the Canon RF 100mm f2.8L MACRO IS USM system page.

The RF 400mm f2.8L IS USM and RF 600mm f4L IS USM lenses follow the blueprints of their EF counterparts, with an almost identical set of build and optical specifications. That's not to say they aren't forward-looking. With improved focusing speeds, customisable focusing presets and futureproof power drive systems, these two prime telephoto lenses are the creme de la creme of the RF lens line-up, designed with professional photographers in mind.

Both the RF 400mm f2.8L and RF 600mm f4L are also compatible with Canon's RF 1.4x and 2x Extenders, announced in 2020.

For full specifications and press release, see the Canon RF 400mm f2.8L IS USM system page and Canon RF 600mm f4L IS USM system page.

The RF 100mm f2.8L MACRO IS USM will have a recommended retail price of £1,479.99 / €1,689.99.

The RF 400mm f2.8L IS USM will have a recommended retail price of £12,449.99 / €14,179.99.

The RF 600mm f4L IS USM will have a recommended retail price of £13,409.99 / €15,269.99.

Firmware updates for EOS R1 and R5 Mark II

Canon has released new firmware for its flagship EOS R1 camera (version 1.0.2) as well as the EOS R5 Mark II (version 1.0.3), both of which offer the following enhancement and fix: 1. Optimizes the timing of the camera's display of its internal camera temperature warning indicator. 2. Fixes an issue that may interfere with the camera's ability to focus properly when using AF (autofocus) in certain zoom ranges. For the EOS R5 Mark II, Canon advises that if the camera's firmware is Version 1.0.1, you should update the firmware with only one memory card inserted into the camera. You should always read the instructions that come with the firmware update, as there are often details specific to that update, as with the EOS R5 Mark II (above).
