Canon receives eight nominations in new Photo and Video Kit Hall of Fame

Public voting is now open for the 2020 Inaugural Class of the Photo and Video Kit Hall of Fame. MPB, the world’s largest resale platform for digital photography and filmmaking kit, has launched the Photo and Video Kit Hall of Fame to honour the best photo and video equipment of the digital era.

The twenty-five nominees across five awards categories—Classic, Game Changer, Iconic, Road Tested and Trendsetter—cover thirteen leading brands of photography and videography kit. The camera experts at MPB chose the nominees based on their qualities, embodying the spirit of each category.

Canon features strongly in three of the categories, registering eight nominations out of 25 slots, the most for any single manufacturer.

The Classic category – with camera bodies and lenses renowned as evergreen benchmarks of quality – features three Canon classics: the EOS 5D Mark III camera, plus EF 70-200mm and EF 50mm f1.8 lenses.

In the category of the rugged kit workhorses, Road Tested nominees include the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II DSLR camera and EF 24-70mm f2.8 L USM lens.

Cameras in the creme-de-la-creme category, Iconic, are symbols of quality and inspiration and include the Canon EOS 5D and EF 50mm f0.95 lens.

“Being able to handle this range and calibre of kit week in and week out, we’re honoured to be launching the Photo and Video Kit Hall of Fame,” said Matt Barker, CEO and Founder of MPB. “The kit you shoot with can give you the freedom to explore creatively as well as the confidence that you’ll get the right shot. We understand how passionate people are about camera gear, and we launched this Hall of Fame to give people a tangible way to engage with that passion. We’re super excited about this, and we hope you will be too.”

Photographers, filmmakers and creatives around the world can vote for nominees in all five award categories at www.kithalloffame.com and share their selections across social media with the hashtag #kithalloffame. Voting is open until 11 August 2020.

MPB will announce the Photo and Video Kit Hall of Fame’s inaugural 2020 class on World Photography Day – 19 August 2020 – and will award plaques to the manufacturers of the winning kit. The gear itself will feature in an exhibition in Brooklyn, NYC. Details about the exhibition and future induction events will be announced in the coming months.

Canon announces development of flagship EOS R1

Canon Inc. has announced today that it is currently developing the EOS R1, a full-frame mirrorless camera, as the first flagship model for the EOS R system.  Whilst there is no timeline given for launch as yet, Canon has released hints of what's to come in terms of technology. It will use a newly developed processor, called DIGIC Accelerator, alongside the existing DIGIC X found in other R-series cameras plus a newly developed image sensor, which will enable a large volume of data to be processed at high speeds, and which will also deliver advances in autofocus (AF) and other functions as yet unspecified. The Deep learning technology – first found in the current flagship EOS-1D X Mark III DSLR camera – will be embedded in the new EOS R1. Canon also mentions a new AF 'Action Priority' function, which " further recognises subject movement by rapidly analysing the subject's status ". Canon announces EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II as next R system evolution

Canon has today launched two new cameras for the EOS R system – the EOS R1, a new flagship model to take over from the EOS-1D X Mark III, and the EOS R5 Mark II, the next iteration of the ever-popular 5-series. The two camera share much more than just a launch date. They herald the arrival of the next generation of Canon's sensor-based focusing system – Dual Pixel Intelligent AF – as well as offering a raft of improvements over previous R-series cameras. The new features and the improvements alike are powered by a duo of DIGIC processors, one DIGIC X and one DIGIC Accelerator – and by Deep Learning, with the introduction of Action Priority AF for team-based sports. Both cameras sport brand new, purpose-made back illuminated stacked (BSI) sensors; the EOS R1 offers 24.2MP and the EOS R5 Mark II offers 45MP. Rolling shutter effect is reduced, significantly so on the EOS R1. In-camera there's also an up-scaling feature, giving users of both cameras the opportunity to increase res
