Small body, big power – the EOS M5, a new flagship mirrorless camera from Canon

Canon has announced a new EOS mirrorless camera – the EOS M5. It is the first EOS to feature Canon’s DIGIC 7 processor and includes a 24.2 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor with Dual Pixel CMOS AF for sharp photos and dynamic, cinematic movies.

Also new is the EF-M 18-150mm f3.5-6.3 IS STM, an all-occasion lens for EOS M cameras with a versatile 8.3x optical zoom and 4-stop Image Stabilizer for sharp, handheld shots. At just 300g, the lens offers high-end performance in a small body.

Power, precision, performance
DIGIC 7 offers boosted image processing power for lower noise, more detail and richer tones. When combined with Dual Pixel CMOS AF, spontaneous moments can be frozen thanks to DSLR-level AF speeds and accuracy, while sophisticated recognition and subject tracking helps the camera lock onto subjects for longer and more precisely in both movies and stills.

The 24.2 Megapixel sensor includes gapless micro lenses to maximise the sensor area, increasing pixel light sensitivity while making the camera less susceptible to digital noise. The sensor – which includes similar technologies to the EOS 80D – also improves dynamic range and editing latitude. For situations where shallow depth-of-field is needed, like portrait photography or moments of creative expression, the APS-C sensor makes the effect easy to achieve. The EOS M5 offers ISO values up to a 25,600 with no expansion needed.

While you can make the settings work for you, you can’t always control your subject. From an animal on the move to a moment of sporting brilliance, the EOS M5 comes to life in just one second, and can continually shoot at 7fps, or 9fps with fixed AF. For Full HD 60p movies that stay steady, the camera’s five axis-stabilisation keeps frames still even when using non-IS lenses, enhanced even further when using a lens equipped with Dynamic IS.

Electronic viewfinder
The built-in, large electronic viewfinder is centrally placed, for DSLR–like handling. It has a high resolution and fast 120fps refresh rate. When using the viewfinder, the LCD touch screen can be turned into a touch pad, letting you use your thumb to change the AF point or zone, mimicking the multi-controller ‘joy stick’ function of a DSLR. For full control, the camera has several customisable external buttons, including a new thumb-operated dial for easy exposure control. The EOS M5 can be used with over 80 EF lenses using the Mount Adapter EF-EOS M with no loss in performance or quality.

Get connected, stay connected
Alongside Wi-Fi and NFC, the EOS M5 offers Bluetooth connectivity to create a constant connection between your smartphone and camera. From there you can view and transfer images  as it automatically shifts to Wi-Fi when needed. The feature can also be used to turn your smartphone into a simple, low-power remote control for prolonged remote shooting or capturing scenes that require a fast shutter release, such as wildlife shoots.

EF-M 18-150mm f3.5-6.3 IS STM

The EF-M 18-150mm f3.5-6.3 IS STM is a versatile 8.3x optical zoom. With a four-stop Image Stabilizer, camera shake is minimised in lowlight – even when shooting handheld. Dynamic IS ensures steady movie footage on-the-move and it works seamlessly with the in-camera 5-axis digital stabilisation of the EOS M5. Other lens features include STM Motor technology for near-silent focusing and 7-blade aperture.

Pricing and availability
•  The EOS M5 body only will be available from end-November 2016 with an RRP of £1,049
•  The EOS M5 with the EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens will be available from end-November 2016 with an RRP of £1,149.00

More EOS firmware updates

Canon released a number of firmware updates in March 2024, as follows: EOS R3 – version 1.7.1 1. Enables servo zooming to be remotely controlled from EOS Utility or Camera Connect when Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E2/PZ-E2B is attached to a compatible lens. 2. Enables up to 2 TB to be used on CFexpress cards larger than 2 TB. 3. Fixes an issue that may cause the camera, in rare instances, to stop functioning when using GPS. 4. Fixes an issue that may display Error Code 70 when performing anti-flicker shooting at a shutter speed of 1 second or higher. 5. Enhances security for FTPS (File Transfer Protocol Security) connections. 6. Fixes an issue in which Mobile File Transfer may not function when connecting the camera to an iPhone compatible with USB 3.0 and higher. 7. Fixes an issue that, under specific circumstances, may prevent the image from being displayed in the viewfinder or on the screen causing the camera to stop operating, or Error Code 70 may be displayed. 8. Fixes minor issues. EOS

Canon announces development of flagship EOS R1

Canon Inc. has announced today that it is currently developing the EOS R1, a full-frame mirrorless camera, as the first flagship model for the EOS R system.  Whilst there is no timeline given for launch as yet, Canon has released hints of what's to come in terms of technology. It will use a newly developed processor, called DIGIC Accelerator, alongside the existing DIGIC X found in other R-series cameras plus a newly developed image sensor, which will enable a large volume of data to be processed at high speeds, and which will also deliver advances in autofocus (AF) and other functions as yet unspecified. The Deep learning technology – first found in the current flagship EOS-1D X Mark III DSLR camera – will be embedded in the new EOS R1. Canon also mentions a new AF 'Action Priority' function, which " further recognises subject movement by rapidly analysing the subject's status ". This AI-based programming promises to predict the key activity in a match, there

Canon announces EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II as next R system evolution

Canon has today launched two new cameras for the EOS R system – the EOS R1, a new flagship model to take over from the EOS-1D X Mark III, and the EOS R5 Mark II, the next iteration of the ever-popular 5-series. The two camera share much more than just a launch date. They herald the arrival of the next generation of Canon's sensor-based focusing system – Dual Pixel Intelligent AF – as well as offering a raft of improvements over previous R-series cameras. The new features and the improvements alike are powered by a duo of DIGIC processors, one DIGIC X and one DIGIC Accelerator – and by Deep Learning, with the introduction of Action Priority AF for team-based sports. Both cameras sport brand new, purpose-made back illuminated stacked (BSI) sensors; the EOS R1 offers 24.2MP and the EOS R5 Mark II offers 45MP. Rolling shutter effect is reduced, significantly so on the EOS R1. In-camera there's also an up-scaling feature, giving users of both cameras the opportunity to increase res
