Canon has introduced a third lens to its range of EF-M lenses for the EOS M camera. The EF-M 11-22mm f4-5.6 IS STM is Canon's first ultra wide-angle EF lens to feature an optical image stabilizer and the first EF lens with a retractable design.

The lens uses Super Spectra Coatings designed to minimise ghosting and flare, providing excellent results with every shot. Images are crisp and clear thanks to the image stabilizer, which works to keep image blur to a minimum by reducing the effects of camera shake. A 3-stop shutter speed advantage helps to ensure sharp stills, even when light levels start to fade.

Shooting smooth Full HD movies is helped by the advanced Dynamic IS mode which combats more exaggerated forms of camera shake that occur when shooting video on the move. Near-silent STM technology suppresses focus noise during movie capture, so the audience can enjoy crystal clear sound to match the visual quality of the footage captured.

Incredibly compact and lightweight, the EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM has been designed to fit easily into the smallest of spaces so it can be carried everywhere. A new retractable lens design – a first for the EF lens range –  locked in place by a switch, allows users to retract the lens back into the barrel when not in use. This keeps the body slim and compact, reducing the lens length by 13mm. An integrated full-time manual focus ring also provides the freedom to make precise adjustments to focus as needed.

The EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM is available from July 2013 with an RRP price of £379.99 / €449.99.

When using the EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM with the EOS M it is recommended that the camera is upgraded to firmware version 2.0.0 or later. In addition to improved compatibility with the EF-M 11-22mm lens, the firmware update, due at the end of June 2013, is claimed to improve AF performance with the EF-M 18-55mm lens by up to 2.3x

Canon teases new hybrid lenses

  Canon has announced its intention to add new lenses to its hybrid RF L-series range on 30 October 2024, teasing with the image above. Canon’s hybrid lenses are a range of RF L-series primes and zooms designed for high performance stills and video capture. They are able to perform multiple roles and harness technology from Canon’s broadcast, cinema and existing RF lenses to make for a truly versatile range. The first two lenses in the range are the RF 24-105mm f2.8L IS USM Z , launched in November 2023, and the RF 35mm f1.4L VCM lens , announced earlier this year in June. Canon announces forthcoming firmware updates
