Canon's first compact system camera
Canon  expands its EOS range with the launch of the EOS M. This is the company’s first compact system camera (CSC). It offers DSLR-quality imaging, creative features and Full HD movie creation in a compact and easy-to-use model. Canon says that the EOS M is for enthusiasts who chronicle their lives through images without necessarily considering themselves to be photographers.

The EOS M features an 18 megapixel APS-C hybrid CMOS sensor and Canon’s DIGIC 5 processor. A super-fast shutter allows you to capture split-second action. The atmosphere of evening shoots and  night-time scenes can be captured by the ISO range of 100-12,800 (extendable to 25,600).
The camera features a Hybrid AF System that supports super-fast, accurate autofocusing when shooting stills and movies.

With its bright, high-resolution, 3-inch, Clear View LCD II Touch screen, the EOS M gives as much or as little control over your photos as required. You can select different shooting modes and settings via the on-screen icons, or let the Scene Intelligent Auto mode adjust the camera settings according to the subject and shooting conditions.

Whether you want to capture every detail of a close-up or zoom in to frame a subject in the far distance, any one of Canon’s extensive range of over 70 EF lenses can be connected using the new Mount Adapter EF-EOS M.

You can create unique images with a range of Creative Filters, such as Toy Camera effect, Grainy B&W or even a filter that mimics the distortion of a fish-eye lens. The filters can be applied before the shot is captured, with the result previewed in Live View, allowing you to experiment with different effects before selecting the  treatment for your final image.

The EOS M lets you switch easily to Full HD video with stereo sound. Video Snapshot mode helps family and friends avoid long home movie viewing sessions, guiding you to create edited movies in-camera.

Extending the EOS System with dedicated accessories
In addition to compatibility with Canon’s existing EF and EF-S lenses (using Mount Adaptor EF-EOS M), accessories and Speedlites, the EOS M launches with its own bespoke range of compact accessories.

Two new EF-M lenses offer portability and high performance when using the new model – the EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM standard zoom and the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM pancake lens. Both feature new Stepper Motor technology for smooth AF performance, as well as precision Canon optics, while their compact designs complement the camera’s pocket-sized body.

The EOS M will ship with a new Speedlite 90EX flash unit as standard. Lightweight and highly-compact, it offers a maximum guide number of nine and supports wide-angle lenses, making it a general-purpose flash for everyday use. A wireless master function also allows the control of multiple flash guns wirelessly, giving more advanced users the opportunity to experiment with a range of creative lighting effects.

The EOS M is available in sleek black, glossy white, stylish silver or bold red colours.

Canon announces development of flagship EOS R1

Canon Inc. has announced today that it is currently developing the EOS R1, a full-frame mirrorless camera, as the first flagship model for the EOS R system.  Whilst there is no timeline given for launch as yet, Canon has released hints of what's to come in terms of technology. It will use a newly developed processor, called DIGIC Accelerator, alongside the existing DIGIC X found in other R-series cameras plus a newly developed image sensor, which will enable a large volume of data to be processed at high speeds, and which will also deliver advances in autofocus (AF) and other functions as yet unspecified. The Deep learning technology – first found in the current flagship EOS-1D X Mark III DSLR camera – will be embedded in the new EOS R1. Canon also mentions a new AF 'Action Priority' function, which " further recognises subject movement by rapidly analysing the subject's status ". This AI-based programming promises to predict the key activity in a match, there...

Canon teases new hybrid lenses

Canon has announced its intention to add new lenses to its hybrid RF L-series range on 30 October 2024, teasing with the image above. Canon’s hybrid lenses are a range of RF L-series primes and zooms designed for high performance stills and video capture. They are able to perform multiple roles and harness technology from Canon’s broadcast, cinema and existing RF lenses to make for a truly versatile range. The first two lenses in the range are the RF 24-105mm f2.8L IS USM Z , launched in November 2023, and the RF 35mm f1.4L VCM lens , announced earlier this year in June. Keep an eye out as full details will be published as soon as they're available on 30 October 2024.
