Firmware update for EOS 6D Mark II

Canon has released firmware Version 1.0.4 for the EOS 6D Mark II which incorporates the following fix:

• Corrects a phenomenon in which in rare instances, the operation buttons and some touch panel functions do not respond.

This update is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.0.3. If the camera's firmware is already Version 1.0.4, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

When updating the firmware of the camera, Canon recommends that you review the instructions thoroughly before you download the firmware.

Canon revamps its EF 70-200mm lens line-up

Canon has today announced updated versions of two of its mainstays in the EF lens line-up: the EF 70-200mm f4L IS II USM and the EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS III USM.

Digital Photo Professional update supports old EOS cameras

Canon has released Digital Photo Professional version 4.8.30. This adds support for the EOS D30, D60, 10D, 300D, D2000 and D6000.

In addition, the update adds partial adjustment functions.

You can download the update by going to:
and selecting your camera. Then select 'Software' and 'Check for available downloads' with Digital Photo Professional. If there is a choice, select 'Full versions'. You might be asked for your camera serial number.

EF 200-400mm lens firmware update

Firmware version 1.1.0 has been released for the EF 200mm-400mm f4L IS 1.4x lens. It corrects an error in which the subject may not be in focus on some occasions when using this lens with some camera models and performing AF shooting from approximately three metres.
The camera models affected are the EOS-1D X, Mark II,1D X, 1D C, 5DS, 5DS R, 5D Mark III and 5D Mark IV.

TIPA 2018 awards for Canon

Canon has received six awards from the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA). Representing 30 industry magazines from 15 countries across five continents, it is one of the world’s leading photo imaging and press associations. Canon was first commended by TIPA in 1991, and 2018 marks the 24th year it has been recognised for technical innovations to the photography industry. 

Four Canon cameras, one lens and a Speedlite have been recognised as industry-leading this year, and were specifically accredited with meeting the diverse image shooting and video production requirements for all customer types and technical capabilities.

New Cosmos of Photography competition 2018

Canon will be accepting entries for its New Cosmos of Photography 2018 (41st edition) competition from 18 April.

The New Cosmos of Photography is open to entrants globally and is Canon’s cultural project to discover, nurture and support new photographers. Since its launch in 1991, the programme has encouraged participants to explore new and creative ways to engage with photography. In 2015 the contest also opened entry to digital submissions (stills and video) to encourage more novel forms of photographic expression.

The New Cosmos of Photography encourages participants to create original pieces of work that push the boundaries of photography. Award winners will have their work featured at exhibitions and published collections, as well on the New Cosmos of Photography website. To date, the New Cosmos of Photography contest has accepted 27,406 entries, many of whom have gone on to achieve international success through their work.

EOS 5D Mark IV firmware update

Firmware Version 1.1.2 for the EOS 5D Mark IV incorporates the following improvements and fixes:

1. Support has been added for chromatic aberration correction, peripheral illumination correction, distortion correction, and Digital Lens Optimizer when using Digital Photo Professional to process RAW images captured with the following TS-E lenses: TS-E 17mm f4L, TS-E 24mm f3.5L II, TS-E 50mm f2.8L Macro, TS-E 90mm f2.8L Macro and TS-E 135mm f4L Macro.

2. Fixes a phenomenon in which standard exposure may not be obtained, or an irregular exposure may result, when Silent LV (Live View) shooting with the following TS-E lenses: TS-E 50mm f2.8L Macro, TS-E 90mm f2.8L Macro and TS-E 135mm f4L Macro.

3. Support for Exif 2.31 has been added.

4. Fixes a phenomenon in which the camera may not function normally when using the Camera Connect application to shoot a high frame rate movie.

15th consecutive year of No.1 share

Based on a Canon survey, the company’s interchangeable-lens digital cameras (digital SLR and compact-system cameras) have maintained the No. 1 share of the global market for 15 consecutive years, from 2003 to 2017.

EF-M lenses get firmware update for EOS M50

Canon has released updates for three of its EF-M lenses in preparation for the release of the EOS M50 with its new Dual Sensing IS function. This technology combines in-camera body and lens-based shake detection which is then used by the lens to determine the amount of stabilisation required.

Firmware updates are available for the following lenses (click lens name for link):
EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM
EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM
EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM

There are detailed instructions for installing the software when you download the firmware update – Canon recommends that you read this carefully before attempting the installation.

Canon updates software to support new cameras

Canon has updated its portfolio of software for the Canon EOS system to support the three EOS cameras released in February 2018. Digital Photo Professional, Canon's RAW editing software, has been updated to ver. 4.8.20, whilst EOS Utility (ver. 3.8.20), and Picture Style Editor (ver. 1.20.20) also both offer support for the following cameras:

EOS 2000D (Rebel T7)
EOS 4000D

Firmware update v1.0.1 for EOS 200D (Rebel SL2)

Canon has released a firmware update for its smallest current DSLR camera, the EOS 200D (Rebel SL2). Firmware Version 1.0.1 incorporates the following fix:

1. Corrects an erroneous display that may appear when some third-party accessories are attached to the hot shoe.

Firmware Version 1.0.1 is for cameras with firmware Version 1.0.0. If the camera's firmware is already Version 1.0.1, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

Canon EOS M50 launched

Canon today launches the EOS M50, the latest addition to the EOS M series and Canon’s most intuitive and technologically advanced mirrorless camera yet.

Designed for today’s modern adventurers, aimed at vloggers and those moving up from a smartphone or compact camera, the EOS M50 is Canon’s first mirrorless camera to feature 4K movie capability, a Vari-Angle touchscreen and Canon’s latest DIGIC 8 image processor.

Canon states that the M50 sits between the EOS M100 – its entry level mirrorless camera – and the EOS M5 and M6 – two feature-rich models – but is intended as an easier entry point than the latter two cameras. Windows and Mac: Fixes an error in which Dual Pixel RAW Optimiser may not be started.
