Canon has unveiled a new program to help engage students in the world of photography. The Canon Student Network (CSN) is designed to help aspiring photographers studying photography or equivalent courses to take their next step with imaging and further develop their love of photography along with real world business advice. The initial phase of the programme, which launched on 23 September 2013, rolls out to 11 universities across the UK and Ireland and provides tailored experiences, opportunities and offers to help the students develop as their course progresses. The scheme is open exclusively to photography students and students who use photography as an element of their degree. Canon's Digital Photo Professional (DPP) software has been updated. The latest version of this versatile raw converter is 3.13.45. Changes from the previous version are: - now supports images taken with EOS 70D, EOS 100D / EOS Rebel SL1 / EOS Kiss X7, PowerShot G16, PowerShot S120. - supports new lenses EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS STM, EF 200-400mm f4L IS USM Extender 1.4X, EF-M 11-22mm f4-5.6 IS STM). - the accuracy of white balance in M-RAW and S-RAW images has been improved. Interestingly, the help section of the software makes mention of an EOS M2 camera, implying that an update to the EOS M camera is not too far away. Project1709 is Canon's cloud solution for backing up and storing your digital images. The name comes from the date the beta version was launched - 17 September 2012. Project1709 is still in beta mode. The intuitive search functionality allows you to filter photos to locate the image you want to enjoy or share. Meaningful tags added by you, as well as EXIF data, device information, dates, and geo-tags, can all be searched within the Project 1709 interface. Using advanced indexing technology, you can build up a lifetime of images with an extensive collection of contextual data that can be used to theme images, organise collections and make special photos easy to find. Canon has announced that the EOS-1D C, its unique and ground-breaking DSLR designed principally for motion picture capture, has been independently tested in accordance with European Broadcasting Union (EBU) standards for HD content acquisition¹. The tests found that the EOS-1D C is the first-ever DSLR to provide an image of high enough quality for use as a broadcast production tool. More information here.

Canon has captured video footage of Yaeyama-hime fireflies flying in darkness, a feat made possible by the high-sensitivity 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor developed by Canon for video capture that was announced in March 2013. The high-sensitivity, low-noise video-shooting capabilities of the dedicated 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor for Full HD video capture were made possible not only through the integration of the high-performance sensor technologies employed in Canon's digital SLR cameras, but also through the incorporation of new pixel and readout circuitry technologies that reduce noise. Using a camera prototype equipped with the CMOS sensor Canon, in cooperation with Zero Corporation succeeded in capturing video of the Yaeyama-hime fireflies that inhabit Japan's Ishigaki Island, located off the northeastern coast of Taiwan. The launch of the EF CN-E35mm T1.5 L F lens in December 2013 will increase the range of EF Cinema primes to a total of six. The new lens has been designed following strong demand from Cinema EOS users. It features a compact design that combines Canon’s outstanding optics with fast performance – making the lens ideal for shooting in challenging low-light conditions. Ensuring consistency when shooting across a number of different Cinema prime lenses, the new 35mm lens provides colour reproduction that matches others in the range. It also features the same form factor and uniform markings, making it easy to switch between lenses when on a shoot.

Canon is increasing the maximum ISO setting of the Cinema EOS C500, C300 and C100 from 20000 to 80000. This will allow shooting in extreme low-light conditions. The firmware updates will also add feature enhancements to these cameras and the EOS-1D C. For full details see the Canon press release.
