Ultra-large sensor tracks faint meteors and more

An ultra-large-scale, ultra-high-sensitivity CMOS sensor developed by Canon has enabled video recording of meteors with an equivalent apparent magnitude of 10. Apparent magnitude is a measure of a star's brightness as seen by an observer on Earth. The brighter the celestial body appears, the lower the value of its apparent magnitude. The darkest star visible to the naked eye has an apparent magnitude of approximately 6. The sensor, with a chip size measuring 202 x 205mm, has the world's largest surface area for a CMOS sensor (as at 12 September 2011). It has been installed in the Schmidt telescope at the University of Tokyo's Kiso Observatory. The ultra-large-scale, ultra-high-sensitivity CMOS sensor is among the largest that can be produced from a 300mm (12-inch) wafer. The sensor is approximately 40 times the size of Canon's largest commercial CMOS sensor – the  21.1 megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor used in the EOS-1Ds Mark III and EOS 5D Mark II cameras. It

'Captain America' shot by EOS 5D Mark II

The feature film, "Captain America: The First Avenger", used the 5D Mark II to shoot motion sequences that were seamlessly integrated with the production's 35mm film footage. "The challenge with a lot of action photography is getting the camera in the right position," noted Jonathan Taylor, second unit director/director of photography. "I'm always looking to get the camera into impossible to reach places because those kinds of shots make action sequences much more exciting. Most 35mm motion-picture cameras and even the leading digital cinematography cameras are just too big to get into interesting positions." Action scenes in "Captain America: The First Avenger" in which Taylor used 5D Mark II cameras for POV (point-of-view) shots include a car chase and crash and a high-speed motorcycle pursuit. The small size of the camera enabled Taylor to mount it on the interiors and exteriors of moving vehicles to capture dramatic action shots.

canon.com or .canon?

New generic top-level domains (GTLD) are now possible, following approval of a plan at the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). This might not mean much to you, but you will be familiar with top-level domains (TLD) .com, .net and .org. These help to bring order to the internet. The new plan is to allow companies to register their names as domains. So instead of canon.com/slr you could have slr.canon It will not be cheap. There is a set-up fee of $185,00, plus an annual fee of $25,000 to establish a GTLD - not to mention all the legal costs of establishing the right to use a domain name. Who would have the right to the .eos domain, for example - Canon or Volkswagen? The first GTLDs could be in use by the end of 2012.

Canon production back to normal by end of June

Canon production was badly hit by the Japanese earthquake and tsunami last March, by the rolling electricity blackout which followed and by the difficulty in procuring raw materials, parts and other supplies. However, in an interview with Reuters, Fujio Mitarai, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Canon Inc., forecasts that production should return to normal by the end of June. Potential power shortages caused by serious damage at a nuclear power plant still remain a risk for the company. Canon is looking at expanding a factory under construction in Kyushu, southern Japan, to help spread the manufacture of key components .

Canon is one of the top Japanese brands

Canon has moved into the top three in Interbrand’s ‘Japan’s Best Global Brands 2011’, rising from fourth place in the 2010 rankings. The ranking, which is now in its third year, ranks brands according to financial performance and is seen as a good indication of brand strength. To qualify, each brand must originate from Japan, be listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, have a good level of global recognition and derive at least 30 percent of its total sales from outside Japan. According to Interbrand, Canon’s brand value is $11,442 million, a significant improvement of 9% on last year’s valuation.

Europe's most trusted camera brand

Canon has been voted as the top Camera Brand in the Reader’s Digest Most Trusted Brands Survey 2011, an annual pan-European survey of consumer attitudes to brand products and services. Reader’s Digest asked its readers across 16 European countries to nominate the brand they trusted most in a range of consumer categories, including cameras. Canon came out on top in 13 of the 16 countries based on the following four criteria: quality, excellent value, strong image and understands customer needs. This is the eleventh consecutive year that Canon has been voted as Europe’s top camera brand.

Canon chairman is world-class executive

Fujio Mitarai, Canon's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, has made Barron’s annual list of the world’s 30 best chief executives for the fourth consecutive year. He has been recognised for his five-year growth plan to boost Canon’s revenue outside of Japan and invest in new business, and more recently for taking control of the company’s disaster recovery efforts following the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011. Barron’s compiled its annual roster of the top corporate leaders from around the world in 2011 by looking in particular at how individuals have tailored plans to approach Asia and other developing markets.  The selection of finalists was based on information collected from interviews with analysts, investors and executives. 2011 marks the 50th anniversary for Mr Mitarai as an employee of Canon.  He has served in a number of key roles for the company throughout his career, before being appointed President and CEO of Canon Inc. in 1995.

Japan earthquake

Canon Inc. has issued a damage report for its operations following the major earthquake. The greatest impact is on three Canon Inc. operation sites and five Canon Group companies in northern Honshu - the area hardest hit by the earthquake. Damage was significant at the Utsunomiya Office and Fukushima Canon Inc. 15 people were injured at the Utsunomiya Office. Operations at both locations have been suspended and it is likely to be some time before they are resumed. If necessary, Canon will consider making use of alternate sites that have not been damaged to continue production. While the earthquake had a slight impact on Canon offices, plants and group companies in the western half of Honshu, there have been no injuries and no significant damage to buildings or equipment. The production of the first EOS camera began at the Fukushima Plant in 1987, but the cameras are currently manufactured in Nagasaki. The Fukushima Plant now produces inkjet printers, print heads and ink tanks. Fu

To put that in context, Thunderbolt will transfer a full-length HD movie in less than 30 seconds. Apple has already incorporated the technology in its latest Macbook Pro computers. Now Canon has indicated that it is interested. "We are excited about Thunderbolt technology and feel it will bring new levels of performance and simplicity to the video creation market", said Hiroo Edakubo, Group Executive, Video Products Group, Canon Inc. Canon has not yet indicated which of their products might be the first with Thunderbolt.

AF points issue with eight early EF lenses

When using any of eight zoom lenses listed below with the EOS 7D, 40D, 50D or 60D cameras, the peripheral AF points do not function as cross-type AF points, resulting in vertical and horizontal lines not being simultaneously detected. Vertical or horizontal lines can only be detected separately. This is due to the optical characteristics of the camera’s AF sensor and lens. Designed for Canon’s range of EOS Digital SLR cameras, the new lens will appeal to sports and wildlife photographers, offering exceptional flexibility with a built-in 1.4× extender that creates an increased focal length range of 280-560mm.

60 millionth EF lens

Another EOS milestone has been reached with the production of the 60 millionth EF lens, 24 years after the first EF lens was introduced. This significant landmark was achieved on 11 January 2011 during the production run of an EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM, just thirteen months after the production of the company’s 50 millionth EF lens.
