Canon USA announces development of next RF-S Dual lens for VR

Canon has confirmed that it is developing the RF-S 7.8mm f4 STM Dual lens for the EOS R7 camera to enable users to capture life’s most precious moments in spatial video, and then relive those memories on Apple Vision Pro. The new STM Dual lens will be added to Canon’s EOS VR System line-up, and will be available in autumn 2024. Canon is the first camera manufacturer to introduce a dedicated, interchangeable lens that enables pro users to capture stunning spatial video to experience on Apple Vision Pro.

After capturing video with the interchangeable lens, the EOS VR Utility app transforms the video captured to spatial video, which can then be watched on Apple Vision Pro.

The RF-S 7.8mm f4 STM Dual lens features a field angle that is similar to a person’s field-of-view. The lens is also equipped with a high-speed autofocus (AF) mechanism, making it accessible to a range of users with differing experience levels.

Canon launched the EOS VR System for capturing immersive and VR video in 2021, to meet the needs for video production in diverse fields including entertainment, tourism, and education. The EOS VR System features dual lenses, utilising the left and right lenses to produce content with incredible depth and dimension. To streamline the video production workflow, the light entering from the respective lenses is recorded onto a single CMOS sensor, which eliminates the need for camera position adjustments or synchronisation prior to shooting, or the need for piecing together footage after filming.

Canon announces development of flagship EOS R1

Canon Inc. has announced today that it is currently developing the EOS R1, a full-frame mirrorless camera, as the first flagship model for the EOS R system.  Whilst there is no timeline given for launch as yet, Canon has released hints of what's to come in terms of technology. It will use a newly developed processor, called DIGIC Accelerator, alongside the existing DIGIC X found in other R-series cameras plus a newly developed image sensor, which will enable a large volume of data to be processed at high speeds, and which will also deliver advances in autofocus (AF) and other functions as yet unspecified. The Deep learning technology – first found in the current flagship EOS-1D X Mark III DSLR camera – will be embedded in the new EOS R1. Canon also mentions a new AF 'Action Priority' function, which " further recognises subject movement by rapidly analysing the subject's status ".
