A trio of innovative lenses from Canon

Canon has announced three new lenses for the EOS R mirrorless camera system, expanding the range of optics available for enthusiast and professional photographers, videographers and filmmakers alike.

RF 200-800mm f6.3-9 IS USM is a super-telephoto lens that looks like an L-series, is robust like an L-series, but without the L-series price tag. Ideal for enthusiast nature and sports photographers, the RF 200-800mm is the longest reaching zoom for the EOS R system, which can be extended even further with the use of Canon's teleconverters, the Extender RF 1.4x and 2x. It offers image stabilisation with a benefit of 5.5 stops, which increases to 7.5 stops when used with compatible IBIS
(in-body image stabilisation) equipped cameras. Weighing just over 2kg, and with a trumpet-type design, this lens can be used handheld to capture distant and otherwise inaccessible subjects.
RRP: £2299.99 / €2619.99

RF 24-105mm f2.8L IS USM Z lens is a new type of optic with which Canon has aimed to blend technology from its stills, cinema and broadcast lens experiences and applications. This hybrid lens bridges the gap between different media industries, providing a lens that can cross between platforms and capture types effortlessly. Equipped with two Nano USM motors, 5.5 stops of optical image stabilisation, a manual iris (aperture control) ring for video with 32 steps and weather sealing, it's an adept piece of kit whether you're shooting video or stills. It can also be used with the new Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E2 for even greater video functionality, plus focus breathing suppression and electronic parfocal focus capability marks its suitability for a range of moving image sectors.
RRPs: £3439.99 / €3929.99 for the lens only, with the PZ-E2 available for £1149.99 / €1309.99 and the PZ-E2B for £1529.99 / €1749.99.

RF-S 10-18mm f4.5-6.3 IS STM lens takes its cue from the EF-S range, but has been completely redesigned to incorporate the benefits of the RF lens mount. Its ultra-wide angle focal length range is well-suited to photographers, videographers and vloggers alike, enabling you to capture more of your surroundings. It's an incredibly compact and lightweight lens, weighing only 150g and measuring a mere 44.9mm in length when retracted. The redesign means that the weight is at the back of the lens for better handling, and also that the image quality is vastly improved across the frame, even at the edges.
RRP: £379.99 / €439.99

All three lenses will be available in late December 2023, whilst the Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E2 / PZ-E2B will be available in March 2024 (and will require firmware updates with compatible cameras, which are expected from December 2023).

Canon announces development of flagship EOS R1

Canon Inc. has announced today that it is currently developing the EOS R1, a full-frame mirrorless camera, as the first flagship model for the EOS R system.  Whilst there is no timeline given for launch as yet, Canon has released hints of what's to come in terms of technology. It will use a newly developed processor, called DIGIC Accelerator, alongside the existing DIGIC X found in other R-series cameras plus a newly developed image sensor, which will enable a large volume of data to be processed at high speeds, and which will also deliver advances in autofocus (AF) and other functions as yet unspecified. The Deep learning technology – first found in the current flagship EOS-1D X Mark III DSLR camera – will be embedded in the new EOS R1. Canon also mentions a new AF 'Action Priority' function, which " further recognises subject movement by rapidly analysing the subject's status ". Canon announces EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II as next R system evolution

Canon has today launched two new cameras for the EOS R system – the EOS R1, a new flagship model to take over from the EOS-1D X Mark III, and the EOS R5 Mark II, the next iteration of the ever-popular 5-series. The two camera share much more than just a launch date. They herald the arrival of the next generation of Canon's sensor-based focusing system – Dual Pixel Intelligent AF – as well as offering a raft of improvements over previous R-series cameras. The new features and the improvements alike are powered by a duo of DIGIC processors, one DIGIC X and one DIGIC Accelerator – and by Deep Learning, with the introduction of Action Priority AF for team-based sports. Both cameras sport brand new, purpose-made back illuminated stacked (BSI) sensors; the EOS R1 offers 24.2MP and the EOS R5 Mark II offers 45MP. Rolling shutter effect is reduced, significantly so on the EOS R1. In-camera there's also an up-scaling feature, giving users of both cameras the opportunity to increase res
