Canon releases new firmware for the EOS R3 camera *UPDATED*

Canon has released firmware version 1.2.1 for the EOS R3 – its current flagship full frame mirrorless camera – in response to user feedback and requests.

UPDATE: Firmware version 1.2.0 originally offered the improvements below, but was  pulled shortly after release as a bug which affects the mode dial was identified.

Most notably, the frame rate of the R3 for both stills and video has been significantly enhanced. A new custom high-speed setting allows for still images to be shot continuously at up to 195 frames per second (fps) at full resolution in JPEG, HEIF or RAW. For video, it's possible to shoot at 240p in high frame rate mode in Full HD, which can be used for smooth slow motion.

There are other improvements, such as in-camera focus stacking for images taken using the Focus Bracketing feature, plus access to Canon's new Cloud RAW processing feature and the ability to assign crop ratios to a custom button.

See below for the full list of fixes and features being added with this latest firmware.

Download firmware version 1.2.1

As part of the download you will receive instructions on how to install. There's also guidance via the EOS magazine Tips and Tricks section – How to install firmware.

___________

Firmware version 1.2.1 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:
1. Adds the ability to set 'Custom high speed continuous' to the Drive mode. It is possible to shoot from 2 to 50 images continuously at a speed of approximately 30 to 195 fps.
2. Adds the ability to select 'FHD 239.76 fps/200.00 fps' in 'High frame rate.'
3. i) Adds the ability for in-camera 'Depth compositing' during Focus bracketing. ii) Adds Focus bracketing and depth compositing with a flash (Speedlite EL-1).
4. Adds the ability for time-lapse movie recording. Note that the time-lapse movie setting is retained even if the camera enters the Auto Power Off state before starting time-lapse movie recording.
5. Adds the ability of Cloud RAW processing functionality. RAW processing with the latest image processing technology is possible. This is a paid-for service that requires the purchase of a Canon Imaging App Service Plan, which will be available from 25 July 2022.
6. Adds the ability to convert multiple HEIF images into multiple JPEG images..
7. Adds the ability to set [Still Image Crop/Aspect] to [Custom Controls]. The assigned button can be used to switch between crop and aspect ratio.
8. Adds the ability to crop and resize images during transfer to an FTP server.
9. 802.1X authentication/WPA2-Enterprise now supports the PKCS#12 certificate format.
10. Adds an electronic shutter sound to be played when the mechanical shutter or electronic 1st-curtain is set.
11. Enhances the performance of 'Movie Digital IS', which stabilises the image when taking selfies or walking shots using a wide-angle lens.
12. Adds [Auto Power Off Temp.: Standard/High] to the menu for still shooting.
13. Fixes an issue, which displays Error Code 70 on the camera, that may occur, in rare instances, when the [Disp. performance] setting is set to [Smooth].
14. Fixes minor issues.
15. Fixes an issue, in which, after having updated the camera to firmware Version 1.2.0, when performing the [Factory reset] operation, some shooting settings are not retained.

*Items 1 through 14 are changes of Firmware version 1.2.0, and item 15 is newly added for Firmware Version 1.2.1.

If the camera's firmware is already version 1.2.1, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

Canon teases new hybrid lenses

Canon has announced its intention to add new lenses to its hybrid RF L-series range on 30 October 2024, teasing with the image above. Canon’s hybrid lenses are a range of RF L-series primes and zooms designed for high performance stills and video capture. They are able to perform multiple roles and harness technology from Canon’s broadcast, cinema and existing RF lenses to make for a truly versatile range. The first two lenses in the range are the RF 24-105mm f2.8L IS USM Z , launched in November 2023, and the RF 35mm f1.4L VCM lens , announced earlier this year in June. Keep an eye out as full details will be published as soon as they're available on 30 October 2024.

Canon announces EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II as next R system evolution

Canon has today launched two new cameras for the EOS R system – the EOS R1, a new flagship model to take over from the EOS-1D X Mark III, and the EOS R5 Mark II, the next iteration of the ever-popular 5-series. The two camera share much more than just a launch date. They herald the arrival of the next generation of Canon's sensor-based focusing system – Dual Pixel Intelligent AF – as well as offering a raft of improvements over previous R-series cameras. The new features and the improvements alike are powered by a duo of DIGIC processors, one DIGIC X and one DIGIC Accelerator – and by Deep Learning, with the introduction of Action Priority AF for team-based sports. Both cameras sport brand new, purpose-made back illuminated stacked (BSI) sensors; the EOS R1 offers 24.2MP and the EOS R5 Mark II offers 45MP. Rolling shutter effect is reduced, significantly so on the EOS R1. In-camera there's also an up-scaling feature, giving users of both cameras the opportunity to increase res...

RF 28-70mm f2.8 IS STM announced

Canon Europe today announces the RF 28-70mm f2.8 IS STM, a new lightweight lens designed to be a next step for photographers wanting to upgrade from their kit lens.   Designed for a variety of shooting scenarios, from portraiture to street and travel, the fast f2.8 constant aperture throughout the zoom range is ideal for shooting in low light conditions, capturing everything from fading ‘blue hour’ light to dimly lit indoor scenes. Built with reliability in mind, this weather-resistant lens also allows for shooting handheld at slower shutter speeds in lower light environments with optical image stabilisation of up to 5.5 stops.   Measuring just 92.2mm in length when retracted and weighing 490g, this latest lens is among the lightest of its kind. With a significant weight reduction compared to previous lens options, it pairs perfectly with the smaller full frame EOS R-series bodies, such as the EOS R, RP and R8. The RF 28-70mm f2.8 IS STM offers swift adjustments to shutter spe...
