Canon launches EOS VR system for 180º virtual reality capture

Canon has announced a new branch of the EOS family tree – the EOS VR system. This is a pioneering new virtual reality (VR) capture solution that leverages the capabilities of Canon's RF lens mount, around which the EOS R system has been built.

The RF mount has also enabled new, groundbreaking lens design since its introduction in 2018. As part of the announcement, Canon has launched the RF 5.2mm f2.8L DUAL FISHEYE lens. This unusual-looking optic deploys two f2.8 lenses with a combined ultra-wide 190º field-of-view. An image is captured by each of the twin lenses and aligned onto the one sensor, resulting in one image with the same performance characteristics. Additionally, the two EMD (aperture) units – one for each lens – are also finely controlled to maintain a consistent exposure onto the sensor, helping to reduce post-production grading and expertise required to match the left and right image output..

It's compatible initially with the EOS R5 full frame mirrorless camera (via a firmware update, which will be released in due course). Because of the resolution that the R5 is capable of – 45MP for stills and 8K video – the imagery captured will be incredibly detailed and truly immersive for virtual reality environments.

Along with the new RF 5.2mm f2.8L DUAL FISHEYE lens, the EOS VR system also includes a newly-developed Canon VR software application – EOS VR Utility – and EOS VR Plug-in for Adobe Premiere Pro to streamline the 180° VR post-production process. These post-processing software options allow you to easily transform the dual circular fisheye image to a more recognisable side-by-side equirectangular 180° format used in virtual reality.

The new lens is an L-series – denoting it as professional and high quality – which utilises two UD elements per lens, helping to produce sharp clear images from edge-to-edge. It also features SWC coating to help suppress ghosting and flare.

Featuring a gelatin holder across the rear elements, the Canon RF 5.2mm f2.8L DUAL FISHEYE lens can be used with third-party gelatin ND filters, useful when the shutter speed needs controlling in bright conditions.

The release date of the RF 5.2mm f2.8L DUAL FISHEYE lens is as yet unknown, but it will be available for an RRP of £2,099.99 / €2,399.99.

Full press release and further images available via the EOS system.

A trio of innovative lenses from Canon

Canon has announced three new lenses for the EOS R mirrorless camera system, expanding the range of optics available for enthusiast and professional photographers, videographers and filmmakers alike.   • RF 200-800mm f6.3-9 IS USM is a super-telephoto lens that looks like an L-series, is robust like an L-series, but without the L-series price tag. Ideal for enthusiast nature and sports photographers, the RF 200-800mm is the longest reaching zoom for the EOS R system, which can be extended even further with the use of Canon's teleconverters, the Extender RF 1.4x and 2x. It offers image stabilisation with a benefit of 5.5 stops, which increases to 7.5 stops when used with compatible IBIS (in-body image stabilisation) equipped cameras. Weighing just over 2kg, and with a trumpet-type design, this lens can be used handheld to capture distant and otherwise inaccessible subjects.
