Canon development announcement: EOS R3 camera

Canon has released initial details about its next planned full frame mirrorless camera, the EOS R3. Currently in development, the EOS R3 will be Canon's latest professional camera for sports and news photographers and promises to offer lightning speeds and ultimate focusing control.

Here are five teasers from Canon:

• A newly developed BSI stacked CMOS sensor, combined with a new generation DIGIC X processor, will deliver 30 frames per second (fps) shooting speeds with the electronic shutter, with AF/AE tracking.

• Next-generation Dual Pixel CMOS AF will build on the focusing capabilities of the EOS R5 and R6 cameras, adding a new, yet-to-be unveiled subject to the eye, head and body tracking AI.

• Eye Control Function, first seen on the EOS 5 film SLR, will make a digital debut with the EOS R3. This ground-breaking and instinctive feature will allow you to select and move the AF point via the viewfinder with your eye.

• Fast connection is promised in the form of compatibility with Canon's new Mobile File Transfer smartphone app. This will provide a new way to transfer images and speed up workflow whilst on the move, without the need for wired LAN equipment.

• Lastly, the EOS R3 will offer the same professional build and durability as Canon's flagship 1D-series cameras. It also has the same in-built grip as the pro models, providing duplicate sets of controls for whichever orientation you're using to shoot.

In the development announcement, Canon says "the camera will empower professional sports and news photographers to meet challenging demands – to outpace and outperform. Boasting qualities seen in Canon’s DSLR and mirrorless bodies, the EOS R3 truly is a hybrid, next generation camera for the sports and news photographers of today and tomorrow."

There's no detail on pricing or availability as yet, as the EOS R3 is still in development. However, you can see the full information so far on the Canon EOS R3 system page.

RF 28-70mm f2.8 IS STM announced

Canon Europe today announces the RF 28-70mm f2.8 IS STM, a new lightweight lens designed to be a next step for photographers wanting to upgrade from their kit lens.   Designed for a variety of shooting scenarios, from portraiture to street and travel, the fast f2.8 constant aperture throughout the zoom range is ideal for shooting in low light conditions, capturing everything from fading ‘blue hour’ light to dimly lit indoor scenes. Built with reliability in mind, this weather-resistant lens also allows for shooting handheld at slower shutter speeds in lower light environments with optical image stabilisation of up to 5.5 stops.   Measuring just 92.2mm in length when retracted and weighing 490g, this latest lens is among the lightest of its kind. With a significant weight reduction compared to previous lens options, it pairs perfectly with the smaller full frame EOS R-series bodies, such as the EOS R, RP and R8. Firmware updates for EOS R1 and R5 Mark II

Canon has released new firmware for its flagship EOS R1 camera (version 1.0.2) as well as the EOS R5 Mark II (version 1.0.3), both of which offer the following enhancement and fix: 1. Optimizes the timing of the camera's display of its internal camera temperature warning indicator. 2. Fixes an issue that may interfere with the camera's ability to focus properly when using AF (autofocus) in certain zoom ranges. For the EOS R5 Mark II, Canon advises that if the camera's firmware is Version 1.0.1, you should update the firmware with only one memory card inserted into the camera. You should always read the instructions that come with the firmware update, as there are often details specific to that update, as with the EOS R5 Mark II (above).
