Speedlite 600EX II-RT

The Speedlite 600EX II-RT delivers high performance, making it the perfect companion for the flagship EOS-1D X Mark II. Firing up to 50 per cent more flashes continuously compared with its predecessor, and a 100 per cent increase when used with the new CP-E4N external battery pack, it ensures you capture even more of the action. The new and improved heat measure technology prevents overheating and allows longer bursts of flashes.

A guide number of 60 (metres, ISO 100) allows lighting of a subject over a wide range of distances and large areas, ideal for capturing a large group at a wedding, for example. Thanks to a wide lens coverage, from 20mm to 200mm, or to 14mm via the built-in adapter, you can easily control how light is spread across a subject.

For creative illumination, the flash features a wireless slave function, enabling you to make the most of off-camera lighting. The radio control function, pioneered by Canon, provides further creative freedom, allowing photographers to build mood and atmosphere into a scene at up to 30m away by simulating multi-directional light. Up to 15 Speedlites (including earlier EX-RT models) can be used together off-camera for dramatic multi-flash photography – great when shooting interiors.

For portraiture specialists, the new and included bounce adapter SBA-E3 provides more freedom to bounce light from walls and ceilings for a softer, more natural result, while the rotating bounce flash eliminates unwanted shadows. The new clip-on hard coloured filters further helps when balancing flash with ambient light.

The Speedlite 600EX II-RT is available from June 2016 with an RRP of £539.99 / €719.99.

Firmware updates for EOS R1 and R5 Mark II

Canon has released new firmware for its flagship EOS R1 camera (version 1.0.2) as well as the EOS R5 Mark II (version 1.0.3), both of which offer the following enhancement and fix: 1. Optimizes the timing of the camera's display of its internal camera temperature warning indicator. 2. Fixes an issue that may interfere with the camera's ability to focus properly when using AF (autofocus) in certain zoom ranges. For the EOS R5 Mark II, Canon advises that if the camera's firmware is Version 1.0.1, you should update the firmware with only one memory card inserted into the camera. You should always read the instructions that come with the firmware update, as there are often details specific to that update, as with the EOS R5 Mark II (above).
