Canon launches EF 50mm f1.8 STM

Canon has announced the EF 50mm f1.8 STM, the successor to the popular EF 50mm f1.8 II. The new lens is ideal for portraiture and low-light photography. It can also add an artistic edge to everyday objects and settings, thanks to its wide f1.8 maximum aperture and 50mm focal length.

The EF 50mm f1.8 STM features an improved design, Canon’s super spectra lens coating, a 7-blade aperture and STM technology for smooth, near silent focusing. It is compact, lightweight and affordable.

Explore creative portraiture and low-light photography
It’s easy to capture superb portraits, or bold, artistic photos and movies with the new lens – the wide f1.8 maximum aperture provides precise control over depth-of-field. It gives the creative freedom to pinpoint focus on your subject and let the rest of the frame blend into a smooth blur – instantly drawing the viewer’s attention to a specific area. Additionally, the wide aperture lets more light into the lens, so you can comfortably shoot in darker conditions.

As a prime lens, the fixed 50mm focal length provides high quality results, with enhanced visible sharpness and contrast. When paired with an APS-C EOS, the lens is ideal for portraiture, helping you capture the perfect head and shoulder composition. It’s also a useful every day ‘standard’ lens for full frame EOS cameras and is great at shooting a diverse range of subjects with a natural viewpoint and perspective.

The lens also provides a minimum focusing distance of just 0.35m, allowing you to get even closer to subjects and achieve a greater level of magnification, while the 7-blade aperture delivers beautiful blur and out-of-focus highlights. Providing enhanced image quality when compared to its predecessor, the lens features Canon’s Super Spectra Coating, which minimises internal reflections, as well as ghosting and flare.

The perfect addition to any kit bag
The lens has a compact and lightweight design, weighing a mere 160g and easily slips into your bag adding very little to the overall weight of your kit. The lens’s new external design compliments both Canon’s consumer and mid-range EOS DSLRs, while the new metal mount provides a more robust connection to camera bodies. Additionally, the lens’s manual focusing ring gives you added freedom to control the precise area in focus in your photos and movies.

EF 50mm f1.8 STM key benefits:
·         Fast, virtually silent focusing·         A great performer in low-light conditions
·         Super-sharp image quality
·         Compact ‘go-everywhere’ design

Pricing and availability
·         The EF 50mm f1.8 STM will be available from May with an SRP of £129.99/€189.99

Canon announces development of flagship EOS R1

Canon Inc. has announced today that it is currently developing the EOS R1, a full-frame mirrorless camera, as the first flagship model for the EOS R system.  Whilst there is no timeline given for launch as yet, Canon has released hints of what's to come in terms of technology. It will use a newly developed processor, called DIGIC Accelerator, alongside the existing DIGIC X found in other R-series cameras plus a newly developed image sensor, which will enable a large volume of data to be processed at high speeds, and which will also deliver advances in autofocus (AF) and other functions as yet unspecified. The Deep learning technology – first found in the current flagship EOS-1D X Mark III DSLR camera – will be embedded in the new EOS R1. Canon also mentions a new AF 'Action Priority' function, which " further recognises subject movement by rapidly analysing the subject's status ". This AI-based programming promises to predict the key activity in a match, there

Canon announces EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II as next R system evolution

Canon has today launched two new cameras for the EOS R system – the EOS R1, a new flagship model to take over from the EOS-1D X Mark III, and the EOS R5 Mark II, the next iteration of the ever-popular 5-series. The two camera share much more than just a launch date. They herald the arrival of the next generation of Canon's sensor-based focusing system – Dual Pixel Intelligent AF – as well as offering a raft of improvements over previous R-series cameras. The new features and the improvements alike are powered by a duo of DIGIC processors, one DIGIC X and one DIGIC Accelerator – and by Deep Learning, with the introduction of Action Priority AF for team-based sports. Both cameras sport brand new, purpose-made back illuminated stacked (BSI) sensors; the EOS R1 offers 24.2MP and the EOS R5 Mark II offers 45MP. Rolling shutter effect is reduced, significantly so on the EOS R1. In-camera there's also an up-scaling feature, giving users of both cameras the opportunity to increase res
