EOS 7D Mark II – built for speed

Canon has unveiled the EOS 7D Mark II. Building on the EOS 7D and harnessing technologies found in the professional EOS-1D X, the new model is ready for action. Completely rebuilt and redesigned, the EOS 7D Mark II delivers all the performance of its predecessor – and much more.

The camera can capture 10 frames per second (fps) without a drop in resolution. Together with a new 65-point cross-type AF system and Dual DIGIC 6 processors, the EOS 7D Mark II sets a new benchmark for speed and power.

The camera boasts a new 20.2 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor with a native ISO 100-16,000 range, expandable to ISO 51,200.

Completely adaptable to the way you shoot, the camera offers customisable body controls. A new viewfinder which provides approximately 100% coverage. Pro-level movie features include live, uncompressed HDMI output and Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology.

Capture split-second action
The EOS 7D Mark II excels in high-speed situations, shooting bursts of 10 full resolution images in a single second, thanks in part to a newly designed shutter and mirror drive mechanism with a 200,000-cycle shutter durability.

Fast AF system
The fast 65-point AF system can lock on to subjects with pin-sharp precision. Offering one of the most advanced AF systems in a camera of its class, each AF point is a cross-type, with the centre point offering dual cross-type focusing at f2.8 and EV-3 low-light sensitivity. The EOS 7D Mark II lets you tailor the AF system with a customisable menu similar to the EOS-1D X. A new dedicated AF Mode Selection lever lets you switch instantly between AF area modes without taking your eye from the viewfinder.

Infrared metering sensor
Whether you’re shooting indoors or outdoors, under natural or artificial light, consistently accurate exposures are achieved with a new 150k pixel RGB+IR metering sensor – the first in an EOS to include infrared and flickering light sensitivity. A new cutting-edge flicker detection feature ensures images are only shot when light levels are at their brightest level – intelligently analysing the light source and detecting flickering light the eye simply can’t see. Additionally, EOS iTR AF and AI Servo AF III technologies, originally introduced in the EOS-1D X, work alongside the advanced metering sensor to deliver accurate subject tracking.

Cinematic movies in your hand
The EOS 7D Mark II builds on its predecessor’s movie reputation with a new suite of pro-standard recording features. Superior AF performance is executed by Canon’s unique Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, so you can shoot with smooth, accurate focus. In a first for EOS, both Movie Servo AF speed and tracking sensitivity can be customised, giving you complete control for pull-focus effects and transitions between subjects. The camera captures every split second of the action in Full HD quality, with a choice of frame rates from 24p to 60p for smooth movement and slow motion effects.
Footage captured on the EOS 7D Mark II seamlessly fits into existing professional video workflows, thanks to uncompressed (4:2:2) HDMI output to external recorders. Ensuring professional audio capture during every shoot, the EOS 7D Mark II features new dedicated microphone and headphone sockets for external devices, as well as silent control to prevent operational noise being captured if settings are changed.

Improved weather resistance
The EOS 7D Mark II is engineered to shoot in the most demanding situations, with improved weather resistance and a tough magnesium alloy chassis – as well as built-in GPS and a digital compass to help you track your adventures. The EOS 7D Mark II supports a number of accessories, including a new battery grip that enables longer, more stable shooting throughout the day.

Pricing and availability
The EOS 7D Mark II will be available from November 2014 with an RRP of £1,599.99/€1,999.99 (body only).

Canon teases new hybrid lenses

Canon has announced its intention to add new lenses to its hybrid RF L-series range on 30 October 2024, teasing with the image above. Canon’s hybrid lenses are a range of RF L-series primes and zooms designed for high performance stills and video capture. They are able to perform multiple roles and harness technology from Canon’s broadcast, cinema and existing RF lenses to make for a truly versatile range. The first two lenses in the range are the RF 24-105mm f2.8L IS USM Z , launched in November 2023, and the RF 35mm f1.4L VCM lens , announced earlier this year in June. Keep an eye out as full details will be published as soon as they're available on 30 October 2024.

RF 28-70mm f2.8 IS STM announced

Canon Europe today announces the RF 28-70mm f2.8 IS STM, a new lightweight lens designed to be a next step for photographers wanting to upgrade from their kit lens.   Designed for a variety of shooting scenarios, from portraiture to street and travel, the fast f2.8 constant aperture throughout the zoom range is ideal for shooting in low light conditions, capturing everything from fading ‘blue hour’ light to dimly lit indoor scenes. Built with reliability in mind, this weather-resistant lens also allows for shooting handheld at slower shutter speeds in lower light environments with optical image stabilisation of up to 5.5 stops.   Measuring just 92.2mm in length when retracted and weighing 490g, this latest lens is among the lightest of its kind. With a significant weight reduction compared to previous lens options, it pairs perfectly with the smaller full frame EOS R-series bodies, such as the EOS R, RP and R8. The RF 28-70mm f2.8 IS STM offers swift adjustments to shutter spe...

Firmware updates for EOS R1 and R5 Mark II

Canon has released new firmware for its flagship EOS R1 camera (version 1.0.2) as well as the EOS R5 Mark II (version 1.0.3), both of which offer the following enhancement and fix: 1. Optimizes the timing of the camera's display of its internal camera temperature warning indicator. 2. Fixes an issue that may interfere with the camera's ability to focus properly when using AF (autofocus) in certain zoom ranges. For the EOS R5 Mark II, Canon advises that if the camera's firmware is Version 1.0.1, you should update the firmware with only one memory card inserted into the camera. You should always read the instructions that come with the firmware update, as there are often details specific to that update, as with the EOS R5 Mark II (above).
